Ayodhya is the Janmabhoomi (birthplace) of Lord Ram - the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu - and one of the seven Mokshapuris of Sanatan Dharma, alongside Kashi, Mathura, Haridwar, Kanchi, Ujjain and Dwarka. The Shri Ram Mandir, consecrated on 22 January 2024 after a five-century struggle and the 2019 Supreme Court verdict, is a three-storey Nagara-style temple of pink Bansi Paharpur sandstone, Karnataka granite and Makrana marble. The inner sanctum houses the 51-inch Ram Lalla murti carved by sculptor Arun Yogiraj, set so that the Surya Tilak - a beam of sunlight - falls on the deity’s forehead at noon every Ram Navami.

A five-century journey home
Ayodhya - the ancient Kosala capital of the Ikshvaku dynasty into which Lord Ram was born - is among the most revered cities of the Ramayana world. For centuries devotees held that the Ram Janmabhoomi marked the exact birthplace of Ram. The site became the centre of a long civilisational dispute, resolved by the Supreme Court of India on 9 November 2019, which cleared the way for the construction of the temple by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.
The 161-ft, three-storey Nagara temple - designed by architect Chandrakant Sompura and built in pink Bansi Paharpur sandstone - was consecrated in the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of 22 January 2024. The 70-acre complex, with its seven parikrama shrines, is being completed in stages alongside the redeveloped Ayodhya Dham railway station and the new Maharishi Valmiki International Airport. Around it stand the older living shrines of Ayodhya: Hanuman Garhi atop its 76-step climb, the gilded Kanak Bhawan gifted to Sita by Queen Kaikeyi, and Nageshwarnath, traditionally founded by Ram’s son Kush.

The temple opens with the Mangala Aarti before dawn and closes with the Shayan Aarti at night, with darshan in the morning and afternoon windows. Plan your visit around the aarti you wish to attend.

Dress code & what to carry
Modest traditional attire - dhoti-kurta for men, saree or salwar-kameez for women. Western shorts, sleeveless tops and mini-skirts are discouraged, and leather items must be removed. Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the complex and are deposited in free lockers near the entrance.

Reaching Ayodhya by rail, air and road
Ayodhya now has both its own railway station and its own airport inside the city - a recent change from when pilgrims had to route through Lucknow or Varanasi.
By road
Via Lucknow - about 134 km
A comfortable drive of roughly 3 hours on NH330; most first-time visitors without a direct flight or train still route through Lucknow.
By rail
Ayodhya Dham Junction - about 1.2 km from the temple
The redeveloped station sits inside the city itself, with direct trains from Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi and beyond; most pilgrims complete the last stretch by auto-rickshaw or on foot.
By air
Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ) - about 15 km from the temple
Commercial flights began in January 2024; the network of direct routes is still growing, so many travellers still fly into Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport and complete the journey by road.
The airport and station distances come from public transport records rather than a single official distance table, and road time can lengthen considerably around Ram Navami and Deepotsav when the city is at its busiest. Message us and we will plan the smoothest arrival for your dates.

What should I expect on arrival at the Ram Mandir?
Security is airport-style: mobile phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside and go into the free lockers near the entrance. Footwear comes off before the inner precinct. The complex covers 70 acres, so expect real walking between the entry, the parikrama shrines and the sanctum. Queues lengthen sharply on Ram Navami, Deepotsav and other festival days - we could not find an official wait-time figure or a paid quick-darshan option to quote, so ask us closer to your dates and we will share the latest ground picture.
Is the Ram Mandir complex manageable for elderly or disabled visitors?
Yes, to a good degree - the complex was built with ramps and lifts for elderly and differently-abled visitors, alongside a pilgrim facility centre offering medical and locker services. That said, the 70-acre complex still involves real distances on foot between the entry, the parikrama shrines and the sanctum, with some queuing corridors. Tell us in advance and we will arrange a slower pace and someone with your group through the busiest stretches.
